Xtrodes – Yael Hanein

Wearable technology for accessible medical data

Medical-grade electrophysiological data, including signals from the brain, muscles, and heart, can provide valuable information for diagnosis and treatment. Traditionally, collecting these signals has required specialized medical facilities, equipment, and staff, limiting when and where patients can be monitored.

The Zimin-supported research led by Prof. Yael Hanein explored the use of wearable electrophysiology to capture facial expressions and emotional states during virtual reality experiences. This work contributed to the development of technology that became Xtrodes, whose Smart Skin platform uses flexible, ultra-thin, dry electrodes to collect high-quality EEG, EMG, and ECG signals directly from the skin. By making electrophysiological monitoring more portable, comfortable, and accessible, Xtrodes aims to enable healthcare professionals to gather richer data in real-world settings and support better diagnosis, personalized treatment, and patient outcomes.

Today, our laboratory develops wearable electrophysiology platforms capable of recording high-resolution neural and muscular signals during everyday life. These technologies support research in human–machine interaction, facial expression analysis, silent speech, gesture recognition, sleep monitoring, cognitive state assessment, neurorehabilitation, and retinal neuroprosthetics. By integrating advances in materials science, flexible electronics, machine learning, and neuroscience, we strive to translate fundamental discoveries into practical healthcare technologies and next-generation intelligent interfaces.
